Tyndale's New Testament 1551
William Tyndale was the first to translate the New Testament into English from the Greek (1526 A.D.). The translation was made from Erasmus Greek New Testament. Tyndale's Greek Testament would form the basis for all subsequent English versions for the next 400 years. It is no wonder he is often called the Father of the English Bible.
Taverner's Bible
"This is the 1551 edition of Taverner's Bible produced by Richard Taverner, an Oxford Greek scholar. It was a revision of Matthew's Bible of 1537. Though a fine translation overall, it was soon overshadowed by the Great Bible which was printed in the same year as Taverners (1539)."
The Coverdale Bible
In 1535 Miles Coverdale produced the first complete Bible in the English language. Not being a Hebrew or Greek scholar, he used mostly Tyndale's Bible and Luther's. It was the first Bible to be licensed by the King for distribution. The edition pictured here was published in 1553.
The Great Bible
"This is the 1562 edition of the Great Bible, a revised version of Matthew's Bible. Miles Coverdale was the guiding force behind this BIble. It was called Great because of its size. Based on Tyndale's Bible as well as Greek and Hebrew texts, it was the first authorized English Bible, the imprimatur granted by Henry VIII. Often called the Chained Bible, copies were chained to the lecturn or table in every parish church in England so people could either read it or hear it read. The first edition was printed in 1539."
